Thoughts from a comfy chair after a satisfying day teaching high school choir.
The featured picture is from when GGC played an improv/icebreaker/team building activity called “Animal Kingdom”. Think “Rock,Paper, Scissors” but on steroids. Hit me up if you want a better description.
It’s due to fun, barrier shattering activities like this combined with tough days like yesterday (they were wild) that make days like today feel so sweet. We even had a chance to reflect on this together in class.
We had three visitors from Lipscomb University’s music education program to observe. THIS INCLUDED LAST YEAR’S LAWSON CHOIR PRESIDENT who is now studying to be a choir teacher. (Hi Jay. J). In addition to the students, the director of choral activities at Lipscomb University, Dr. Matt Taylor observed.
Not only did GGC stay on the risers for the entire class, but they made it through their “fine by me” round without falling apart, sang a three part version of Siyahamba and then went full chest voice on Kayne West’s “Heartless”. I cut the track when they were going full throttle and picked right up in the piano. It sounded great. They were encouraged.
I asked the college students for feedback on what they see because they have such a different perspective compared to what I am seeing/hearing. I will follow up on this.
I am looking forward to our choir concert at 6:00 p.m. on November 14th in the Lawson Performing Arts Center. Thanks for reading. I hope you had a good day. If you didn’t, tomorrow will be better.
